    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This refreshing blackberry ginger margarita is made with fresh blackberries, ginger, and of course tequila and triple sec! The sweetness of the blackberries is balanced out by the kick from the ginger.

Blackberries are typically in season July-September, which makes it the perfect thing to add to a summer cocktail for those hot days!

    ingredients for blackberry ginger margarita
    • Blackberries
    • Ginger
    • Lime
    • Tequila
    • Triple Sec
    • Optional: simple syrup
    • Optional: salt for the rim

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

step 1 of recipe, smash and strain the blackberries

Place blackberries, ginger, and lime juice into a cocktail strainer and muddle thoroughly. Add the tequila, triple sec, and ice and shake well.

step 2, salt the rim of the glass

Then, rub a lime wedge along the rim of your glass and fill with ice.

final step, pour margarita into salted glass

Finally, strain the blackberry ginger margarita into your glass and garnish.

Hint: The reason I like to shake the ingredients with ice before straining into a glass with ice is so the ice doesn't melt at all when the cocktail is added.

    Variations

    • Spicy - For extra spice, use more ginger or shake some slices of jalapeño with the cocktail before straining.
    • Non alcoholic - Just swap out the tequila and triple sec for sparkling water and enjoy!

    Equipment

    • Cocktail shaker: If you don't have one a mason jar works as a good substitute.
    • Muddler: If you don't have one you can use the back of a wooden spoon.

    Top tip

Don't add simple syrup until you taste the cocktail, sometimes the blackberries are sweet enough that you don't need it!

    FAQ

How do I make simple syrup?

Just bring equal parts water and sugar to a boil, stir until the sugar dissolves, and remove from heat. Or, you can find it pre-made in the liquor section of most grocery stores!

    For single serving

    • ⅓ cup blackberries
    • 2-3 quarter size pieces of fresh ginger
    • 1 lime juiced
    • 2 oz tequila
    • 1 oz triple sec
    • ice
    • optional: simple syrup to taste
    • optional: salt for rim, lime slices and blackberries for garnish

    For a pitcher (12 servings)

    • 4 cups blackberries
    • 24 quarter size pieces of fresh ginger
    • 1.5 cups lime juice about 12 limes
    • 3 cups tequila
    • 1.5 cups triple sec
    • ice
    • optional: simple syrup to taste
    • optional: salt for rim, lime slices and blackberries for garnish

    Instructions

    • Pour the blackberries, ginger, and lime juice into a cocktail shaker and muddle thoroughly (If you are making a pitcher, you may want to puree in a blender to make it easier).
    • Add the tequila, triple sec, and ice into the cocktail shaker. Shake thoroughly. Taste and add simple syrup as desired.
    • To salt the rim of your glass, rub a lime wedge along the rim. Sprinkle salt (I use coarse sea salt) onto a small plate and swirl the rim in the salt. Add ice to glass.
    • Using a cocktail strainer (or mesh strainer), strain cocktail into the salted glass.
    • Optional: Add lime slice and/or blackberries for garnish as pictured.
